5 Year old Japanese Holly

Japanese holly is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the holly family. This holly is a native of Japan and East Asia and can be found in thickets, woods, and wet places in lowlands and mountains all across Japan.

The Japanese Holly is an evergreen providing year-round greenery.  Japanese holly has small, shiny green leaves, the dense, rounded bushes resemble boxwoods but offer blackberries for additional interest.

The Japanese Holly is really good Bonsai material and is very sought out for its naturally small leaves, white flowers and small black berry-like fruits. Although the holly only produces fruit when there are both male and female plants by each other and both are flowering at the same time.

Japanese Maple is a species of maple native to eastern China Taiwan and Japan.

This is a small deciduous tree with ascending branches when young, maturing to a more rounded canopy. Leaves are small, triangular and tri-lobed. New spring foliage is a rich bronzy-red colour maturing to a dark green in summer. In autumn foliage turns yellow to orange to red. Bark is a pale grey-brown orange and appears scaly or flaky. Flowers are green and inconspicuous.

Your Bonsai should be left outside in full sun to part shade, they can tolerate coming inside for short (2-3 days) periods of time to impress your guests.

Your Bonsai must be watered daily during the growing season. During winter and the cooler months it's a good idea to feel the soil to determine if it needs water.  The soil should be slightly damp but never bone dry.
